Owens dry lake bed contained water until 1924. In 1913, its water source was diverted to feed the Los Angeles water system and over the next 11 years the lake evaporated, leaving many mineral deposits on the surface. These deposits of halite, trona, thenardite, and others are harvested in mining operations on the lakebed.
